Celia is Rosalind’s best friend and cousin in the play As You Like It by William Shakespeare. She is the daughter of Duke Frederick. The first act of the play takes place in the Dukedom of Duke Frederick, who usurped his brother’s place as Duke. The Dukedom is somewhere in England, as later the play takes place in the Forest of Arden, a forest near Shakespeare’s home town. This is important because is gives us a geographical idea of the setting, and perhaps even some insight into the people of the area. Celia’s goal in the first act to stick with her best friend and cousin even at the loss of her wealth and even her father. As Celia’s over all goal is to be with Rosalind, this helps her as then she is never away from her. She can always keep close to her cousin and best friend in life.
To achieve her goal, Celia leaves her wealth and power to follow Rosalind into the Forest of Arden, thus never leaving her and keeping their friendship strong. Obviously her relationship with Rosalind is strong and they are probably as close as most sisters. She also has a strong connection with Touchstone, as he follows them into the Forest of Arden.
